A Small Contribution to the Environment

The Rotary Club of Goolwa has had a commitment to the environment since 1998 when the club partnered with the students from the Goolwa Primary school, and completed a planting of ten thousand trees at the Hindmarsh Island Cemetery. From that start, most winters have seen members and friends don their gardening clothes, planting close to thirty thousand trees, on roadsides, parklands, and catchment areas within the council boundary.
In addition to tree planting club members have been carrying out regular roadside clean-ups, since 2006, resulting in many trailer loads of rubbish being removed from the Goolwa to Middleton road.
Last year the club created a display highlighting the damage that plastic waste is doing to the environment. This display was presented at seven schools in the area, also in the mall in Goolwa and various other venues by invitation.
This year the club decided to take the initiative further and, (courtesy of the owner), has set up a stand in the Goolwa shopping mall offering cloth bags as an alternative to plastic for fruit and vegetables. These re-usable bags are currently made by club members and a box is provided for gold coin donation for each bag. Depending on the response, it is planned to involve the wider community in this project in an endeavour to increase awareness of the need to save our oceans and wildlife.
